Recap of the 2024 Jared Wannamaker Memorial Open Bonspiel

The club hosted 24 teams from all over the province, some traveling from Nelson, Fort St. John, Read Island, and Campbell River. Many friends and family gathered during the weekend to volunteer or just have a drink in honour of Jared.

Friday night’s dinner of chili and rolls was sponsored by MACDEV Financial and prepared by Terry Nichols and Dave Gant. Allan Harding from the 101 Brewhouse hosted Bonspiel Music Bingo in the lounge. Click to see Friday night highlights.

An opening ceremony was held between the 7 and 9:30 pm draws so that everyone who wanted to participate could. Craig Buchanan piped everyone out on the ice before Ed Hill spoke about Jared. Colleen Wannamaker paid the piper with a shot of whiskey and Ken Johnson threw the first rock to the broom held by Kyle Wannamaker as Jared’s teammates swept. Click to see a video of the ceremony.

On Saturday there was curling all day from 8 am until 1 am. Sue Mearns and helpers served up the famous curling club burgers for lunch. Dinner was sponsored by Super Valu (thanks Dave!) and prepared by Carol Hickman and her helpers. The yummy desserts were provided by club members. An amazing list of items was auctioned off by our own Ed Hill - thanks to all who donated or purchased these items, providing a very nice start to the new bursary fund. The raffle was also well-received; many thanks to everyone who helped with that. Half Cut and the Slackers played music in the lounge all evening. The bar was a hopping place all weekend filled with teams and spectators. Many thanks to Sami and Sylvia and the other bartenders for a great weekend. Click to see Saturday and Sunday photos.

Winning the B Event was Team Clegg, skipped by Keith Clegg, with his dad Dwayne Clegg, his wife Sara Clegg, and friend Patrick King-Webber. C Event winners were Roger Pagani, Dan Dupuis, Steve Ashworth, and Joel Gagnon from Powell River.

A big thanks to Deb Nunn, Bryan Fitchell, Ev Roth, Kevan Penonzek, and Ed Hill for helping to organize the event. Thanks to all the volunteers, too many to list, but please know how much you are appreciated.

It was a wonderful tribute and the perfect way to celebrate and honor Jared. A good time was had by all and we look forward to doing it again next year!
